Ontario Mathematics Olympics

The Ontario Mathematics Olympics (OMO) has for many years provided a fun, challenging mathematics competition for teams of grade seven and grade eight students. It has traditionally been held in the first week of June. At the event, students solve questions based on the grade seven and grade eight Ontario mathematics curriculum. Some questions are to be answered individually while other questions require a team approach. Students demonstrate their understanding of the mathematical concepts, their ability to solve problems and to communicate their thinking, and their capacity to apply their mathematical knowledge in various situations.

To see some sample activities, and resources to prepare for a student math club or math competition like the Mathematics Olympics, scroll to the bottom of this page.

In an effort to remain responsive to the ever-changing needs of our wonderful students, OAME is currently undertaking a review of the structure and protocols for the OMO, and the provincial OMO has been suspended while this review takes place. However, your local Chapters of OAME may still be offering a Regional Math Olympics events. For more information, check with your local OAME Chapter. If you are not sure what Chapter is in your area, go to our Chapter Locator.

Want to put together a virtual math club? Jason Kroeker, a teacher candidate studying at Western University, London, has put together a TEAMS virtual math club during his virtual practicum under the supervision of professor Vera Sarina. Check it out:

OMO 2009 Math Performances

For the first time, the Ontario Math Olympics included a new component - Math Performances. Each team contributed an artistic math performance or interview with a math concept. Some of the poems that were created were set to music and performed on Friday night. Check out the link below to view the results! Great work teams!
