Professional Learning for Elementary and Secondary Math Teachers in Halton and Peel Regions
Contest Certificate Template Download Template Welcome to the CHAMP web site. CHAMP (The Credit Humber Association for Mathematics Promotion) is the local chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education. Originally called PAME (the Peel Association for Mathematics Education), this chapter of OAME was founded in 1986. A few years later, an invitation was extended to Mathematics Educators from Etobicoke and Halton. Shortly afterwards, CHAMP became a reality. Currently, CHAMP members include elementary and secondary teachers from the Peel DSB, Dufferin-Peel CDSB, Halton DSB and Halton CDSB, as well as administrators, college and university lecturers, pre-service teachers, and retired educators.
Student activities offered by CHAMP are mathematics contests for students from grades 7 to 11. These contests provide great problem solving opportunities for all students, and represent excellent preparation for those outstanding math students who wish to participate in the Canadian Mathematics Competition contests later in the school year. Click on the Contest Tab, above for more information. The Ontario Mathematics Olympiad is a special team-oriented problem solving competition for students in grades 7 and 8. CHAMP hosts regional play-downs for each of the participating boards in early May. The winning teams are invited to represent CHAMP at the provincial OMO finals in June. Each fall, CHAMP hosts its fall conference, Math 4 Fun. This event is always a great opportunity for teachers to acquire new ideas and strategies, see what's new from the publishers, and catch up with friends & colleagues. For more information about CHAMP contact your board’s Mathematics coordinator or e-mail us at CHAMP@oame.on.ca
CHAMP 2011 FALL EVENT FLYER Math4FunFlyer 2011
CHAMP runs events throughout the academic year geared toward students and teachers. Please check the Contest tab and the OMO tab for details on the contests CHAMP runs for grade 7-11 students. There is also an awards assembly in mid May of each year to recognize the achievement of students, and schools that have written all contests. The main vehicle for professional development for teachers in our chapter is the annual mini-conference run in mid October of each year. There are a variety of workshops to choose from for teachers in all divisions as well as a keynote speaker and dinner. This is a great opportunity to connect with math educators in our region. Please check back in June to view the flyer for the upcoming mini-conference. The flyer will also be distributed to math coordinators in each of the boards in the CHAMP region. We look forward to seeing you out at our next event. INFORMATION

As the world evolves, students face changes of increasing complexity and, as part of everyday life, mathematical thought processes have become essential in making sense of our world. At the event, students and teachers will work together and explore the exciting world of math. Each team consists of four students: two grade 7 students and two grade 8 students. Participants will:
Students will be encouraged to develop connection between mathematics and the real world. By posing questions, forming hypotheses, and collecting and interpreting information, participants will develop confidence, strategies and skills for improved learning.
